Fall is basically layering season's red carpet. Cozy textures, richer colors, and outfits with enough depth to carry more than one star of the show. My last post, The Fall Jewelry Mood: Bold, Layered & Effortless, was all about the vibe. This one? The fun part: exactly how to build a layered fall look, step by step. Let's go!
Step 1: Start with your outfit's base layer
Before you grab the sparkle, peek at what you're wearing. Turtlenecks, crew necks, and button-downs each set a different tone for your jewelry. A turtleneck is basically begging for long layers worn over the knit; a V-neck or open collar gives a necklace room to shine up close.
Rule of thumb: the higher the neckline, the longer the necklace. Easy, right? Stay with me.
Step 2: Pick your main focus piece
Every great layered look has one piece that takes the lead. Pick your statement piece first so everything else plays backup instead of fighting for the attention.
- Necklace stacks: a chunky chain or a bold pendant sets the tone.
- Ear stacks: a statement hoop or ear cuff, with little studs and huggies.
- Hands and wrists: a statement ring or a stacked cuff.
Step 3: Layer in twos and threes, not fives
Here's the secret to looking effortless: a little restraint. Two or three pieces that get along read as "she's got style." Five or six pieces all talking at once read as "she's doin too much." I say this with love :).
- Mix lengths so each necklace gets its own moment (try a choker, a mid-length, and a long pendant).
- Vary textures: pair a chunky chain with a thinner or twisted chain for that chef's kiss contrast.
- Mix metals. Mixing gold and silver can fun and make your outfit even more creative.
Step 4: Echo your anchor in one other place
This is the trick that makes a look feel styled instead of thrown together. Bold gold chain as your anchor? Echo it with gold hoops or a gold ring. Statement ear stack? Let a simple necklace chill quietly at the collarbone. One echo, one metal family, and boom: the whole look ties together!
Step 5: Ground it in fall color
Autumn palettes do half the styling work for you, honestly. Rust, olive, camel, cream, and burgundy all make gold tones glow, and deeper stones pop like crazy against dark knits. Strong-colored outfit? Keep the jewelry warm and simple. Neutral outfit? Let the jewelry bring the drama. A little drama never hurts, right!
Step 6: Do the mirror check
Step back, squint, and see what you think or feel. If you've followed all of the steps, then you should look balanced and stylish. Layering can be intimidating and sometimes uncomfortable or unsure. What you have to do now, is walk out of the house, hold your head up high, feel confident and just go with it! You nailed it and you look great! The best layered looks look like you didn't even try, even though (between us) you kinda did - but it's okay. :)
